Omer Guzel on his role as Scrum Master

What exactly do you do as a Scrum Master?

The teams I work with are new Scrum teams. This means that the team members were not yet used to working according to the Scrum methodology. I put together the teams together with the project leader. Then I gave each team an “Introduction basic Scrum / Kick-off scrum team”. During the kick-off I explained what the Scrum methodology entails and how we are going to use the Scrum method.

But I also asked each team member what the vision is for the team, what they ultimately want to achieve as a team. Together we determined the main vision. This had to be clear to everyone and everyone had to support it before we could start. The teams have now been set up and started working according to the scrum methodology. I coach and facilitate the team members so that they work together efficiently and effectively to achieve the set sprint goals.

What are important qualities of a Scrum Master?

As a Scrum Master, you need to be a strong communicator, a good listener, be able to resolve conflicts, coach team members, be able to organize and facilitate well. During the sprint retrospective, the functioning of the Scrum team itself is reviewed. Points for improvement are raised, which are included in the next sprint. As a Scrum Master, it is important that you encourage the team to improve, so that the next sprint will be even more effective and fun.

Furthermore, you need to be able to clearly indicate what you expect from the team members. For example, I make sure that the team members are present at the Scrum events. If they cannot, they need to have signed out properly.

You also need to be able to monitor well. For example, the team members themselves must ensure that the Scrum tool JIRA is always properly updated. I check whether this is done on time and whether it is done according to the rules that we agreed upon in advance.

What do you like about CIMSOLUTIONS?

What I like about CIMSOLUTIONS is that I change clients and projects every few years. I like this variety in my work and it is challenging. I work on projects of about 2 years. Once it is set up and running, I can do something new with another client or on another project. A new challenge. This allows me to continuously expand my knowledge.

What I also really like is that I get to know new people all the time, I also keep expanding my network. It is important at CIMSOLUTIONS that you can easily deal with everyone. Because I am responsible for setting up Scrum teams, I have to find a way to work well with everyone.
