Klim Mikhailov on his role as Information / Data Analyst

Data analist aan het werk achter een laptop

What exactly do you do as an Information / Data Analyst?

The ideal (desired) business situation (“happy flow” in process analysis terminology) is that all business matters run in the right order. One by one, one after the other, with the same (shortest) lead time and well-defined input and output. Unfortunately, in reality this is almost never the case.

It is therefore important to identify all limitations and bottlenecks within the process map, try to take them into account and try to optimize them.

As an Information / Data analyst, I am responsible for retrieving the correct information about the business matters and the most important systems within the concrete business process. I retrieve this information through discussions with domain experts and functional application managers. Then I make an analysis of the data using the systems. This includes formatting and cleaning the data tables, combining data sources via SQL queries, statistical testing of the dependency of variables, visualization of data distributions and analysis of outliers.

As a process analyst I am also responsible for generating the activity table*. Based on this activity table I generate the business process model with which I can analyze which business matters have been completed on time and efficiently and what possible causes there may be for delays and bottlenecks. I share this information with business managers so that they can take the right actions based on my advice to improve the process model in the future.

What are the important qualities of an Information/Data Analyst?

My role as an analyst fits in very well with my scientific background**. Important characteristics are: strong analytical skills, accuracy, punctuality and great curiosity. In addition to having technical skills, the analyst must also be curious about the results in order to spot irregular patterns. Conducting conversations with stakeholders and domain experts requires that the analyst has strong communication skills, listens actively and can record and transfer correct and complete information within a limited time.

Although you are independent as a data analyst in executing SQL queries and building process models, it is the collaboration that strengthens the analysis and generates new ideas. It is never wrong to discuss your findings with other business analysts or domain experts to come to a clearer insight together.

What do you like about working at CIMSOLUTIONS?

CIMSOLUTIONS gives me the opportunity to research external organizations and further determine which work environment suits me best. I have my own study budget that I can use for all kinds of certifications and trainings within my field of expertise. In addition to the learning paths, I am a member of two Competence Centers where I work together with other experts to strengthen our work experience in the relevant field and thereby improve CIMSOLUTIONS’ expertise in this field. There are also social events that are organized regularly by CIMSOLUTIONS where I can socialize with colleagues and do all kinds of fun activities.
